Injuries and withdrawls affecting Euro 08 preperations

FC Internazionale Milano striker Zlatan Ibrahimović has been ruled out of Sweden‘s fixture with Brazil in London because of a knee problem. Coach Lars Lagerbäck said: “We spoke [on Sunday] and we agreed it is best for him to take the chance for some rehab and rest his knee.” Sunderland AFC’s Rade Prica will replace him while Mikael Dorsin has been called up in place of Erik Edman who suffered a serious knee injury at the weekend.

Greece will be without defender Traianos Dellas as they travel to face Portugal, the team they beat to become European champions in 2004. The 32-year-old will remain in Greece to nurse the calf injury that caused him to sit out AEK Athens FC’s win at Apollon Kalamarias FC on Sunday.

Robert Huth’s hopes of a first international appearance since the 2006 FIFA World Cup have been dashed after the Middlesbrough FC centre-back suffered a foot injury. The 23-year-old suffered the injury in club training and will play no part in Germany‘s friendly with Switzerland on Wednesday. “I am very disappointed that I have to postpone my return to the national team, but I hope I can still make the European Championship, said Huth.”

Ibrahim Afellay has been ruled out of the Netherlands‘ friendly against UEFA EURO 2008 co-hosts Austria after failing to shake off an ankle problem. The 21-year-old picked up the knock in training at the start of last week, but started PSV Eindhoven’s friendly against FC Groningen on Saturday, only to suffer a relapse during the second half.
